Biological microparticles detection based on differential capacitive sensing and dielectrophoresis manipulation

The manipulation and detection of living cells are essential requirements for many applications in biology, biotecnology and medicine. In this study, we propose a microfluidic device, which facilitated of a differential capacitively coupled contactless conductively detection (DC4D) coplanar capacitor structure and a dielectrophoresis (DEP) concentrator based on circular electrodes for detecting of living cells. With the proposed device, first, the target and non-Target cells are guided toward the center of the working chamber due to the dielectrophoresis forces. Then the target cells are captured by the electrode covered with aptamers, which possess a high affinity to the target cells. After being flushed to wash away the non-Target cells in the working chamber, the differential capacitance is read to identify the presence of target cells. Adsorption of phosphate from aqueous solutions and sewage using zirconium loaded okara (ZLO): Fixed-bed column study

This study explores the potential of removing phosphorus from aqueous solutions and sewage by Zr(IV)-loaded okara (ZLO) in the fixed-bed column. Soybean residue (okara) was impregnated with 0.25. M Zr(IV) solution to prepare active binding sites for phosphate. The effect of several factors, including flow rate, bed height, initial phosphorus concentration, pH and adsorbent particle size on the performance of ZLO was examined. The maximum dynamic adsorption capacity of ZLO for phosphorus was estimated to be 16.43. mg/g. Breakthrough curve modeling indicated that Adams-Bohart model and Thomas model fitted the experimental data better than Yoon-Nelson model. After treatment with ZLO packed bed column, the effluent could meet the discharge standard for phosphorus in Australia. Successful desorption and regeneration were achieved with 0.2 NaOH and 0.1 HCl, respectively. Measurement of the b- Quark Production Cross Section in 7 and 13 TeV pp Collisions

Measurements of the cross section for producing b quarks in the reaction pp -> b (b) over barX are reported in 7 and 13 TeV collisions at the LHC as a function of the pseudorapidity. in the range 2 < eta < 5 covered by the acceptance of the LHCb experiment. The measurements are done using semileptonic decays of b-flavored hadrons decaying into a ground-state charmed hadron in association with a muon. The cross sections in the covered. range are 72.0 +/- 0.3 +/- 6.8 and 154.3 +/- 1.5 +/- 14.3 +/- mu b for 7 and 13 TeV. The ratio is 2.14 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.13, where the quoted uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The agreement with theoretical expectation is good at 7 TeV, but differs somewhat at 13 TeV. The measured ratio of cross sections is larger at lower eta than the model prediction. Removal of As(V) from aqueous solutions by iron coated rice husk

A lignocellulosic material extracted from rice husk (Oryza sativa), Vietnam, was modified as a new adsorbent for the removal of As(V) ions from aqueous solution. Iron was coated onto this adsorbent by hydrolization of ferric nitrate while adding an alkaline solution drop wise into the batch type reactor. The adsorption of As(V) ions from aqueous solution on coated rice husk was then studied at varying pH, As(V) concentrations, contact times, ionic strength, and adsorbent amounts. The minimum contact time to reach equilibrium is about 6 h. The adsorption of As(V) anions on the coated rice husk was found to be highly pH dependent due to Coulomb interactions between As(V) species in solution and positively charged surface groups RH-FeOOH, as well as formation of chelate complexes with naturally occurring carboxyl and carbonyl functional groups in the matrix. Factors influencing waste separation intention of residential households in a developing country: Evidence from Hanoi, Vietnam

Although various programs of waste separation at source have been deployed over the last decades in developing countries, they have stopped at the level of pilot-programs and have generally not been replicable. This empirical study aims to investigate the factors influencing the intentions in separating waste of residential households in Vietnam's capital city, Hanoi. The waste separation intentions of respondents were judged by the amount of the cash fine that each household was willing to pay as a commitment to participation. An econometric analysis was employed to demonstrate that trust, personal moral norms, perceived difficulties and reciprocity are important factors explaining the residents' behavioral intentions in waste separation.
